1 Free-Kick vs 40 Crosses As Arsenal Slay Burnley

Podcast: Like most gooners, Blackburn George and me are happy with  getting 3-points, but anybody who propagates the view that  Arsenal had a good game at Burnley is a “charlatan and a liar.” We allowed 40 crosses, they outshot us, had more shots in the box & more corners. Post-game, our good friend Ehab shared with us the following comparable data:

Since Burnley came back up in 2014, Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal  played them 7 times , wining all 7; scored 15, conceded 4. Here’s the relevant stat:

  • Burnley never had more that 5 shots in a game against a Wenger team (on and off target)
  • Burnley had 15 shots against us today
  • Burnley put in 40 crosses against us today
  • They had 21 crosses against Wenger’s team in all 7 matches combined

But according to the charlatans and pr merchants, like Gunnerblog and LeGrove, who for at least 10 years prior to Wenger’s departure trumpeted to their mindless lemmings that we were regressing, now they are saying  Arsenal is progressing despite the evidence to the contrary. After 40 crosses conceded to the 19th place team in the Premier League, this is some progress.

So the media and blogsphere is full of praise for Arteta and Afc after two wins in the Epl against Burnley and Norwich. They seem over the moon after a 3 nil win over the mighty Wimbledon. So have we turned the corner now Shotta? I am not convinced.
I don’t see us at the same level we were under Arsene Wenger.
Let’s see how we fair against better opponents.

    • To be honest Ros, I am not even expecting Wengerball, As a lover of the game, I simply desire quality football with improvements from week-to-week, month-to-month, year-to-year. So far I have seen none of this since Arteta took over. Any improvement is only temporary and is followed by a regression to boring football. But fans are all excited with two wins on the bounce against the two worst clubs in the League. Beating championship AFC Wimbledon is the least that is expected from AFC even with a 2nd XI. As I emphasized in my headlines, when you allow in 40 crosses against the 19th place in the PL that is a spectacular failure by any measure and should alarm any fan. But pretty soon the bubble will burst. Mark my words.

    Completely agree Shotta.
I don’t see us doing better than last year.
I am surprised the media & bloggers are in full praise of Artetas purchases this year when they can see the failure of paying big £££ for Willian Leno Pepe Runnarson Mari etc in front of their own eyes.
